Rockclimbing 101: The Basics

You might think that scaling our walls is a simple endeavor, face your fear, claw your way to the top, that sort of thing. For a lot of first timers, that's exactly what it all boils down to. However, there are actually different types of climbing, and one of the things that makes the New Jersey Rock Gym so great is that no matter what you're into, you can do it here (if you want to climb Everest we even have a staircase you can walk up and down for a week).

For starters, there is top roping. If you want to go to the top, that's your game, and you'll want to sign up for our belay class. This is where we teach you how to tie knots, hold the rope for your partner, and learn all the safety procedures. It's really not as hard as you think, and takes two hours. The class costs $35 dollars, and we even throw in a free week of admission for you to practice, gear included, no long term commitments, no small print. If you need a partner, check out our partner page for listings.

If you want to try something different, or if you don't have a partner, the New Jersey Rock Gym has one of the best bouldering walls in the country. Bouldering is where you climb to a moderate height protected by padding instead of ropes. It may look like a practice because of its modest height, but bouldering is an intense, powerful form of climbing that condenses the difficulty of an entire climb into a few hard moves. Think espresso vs. coffee, or sprinting vs. a marathon. Bouldering is also really social because climbers share a section of wall rather than partnering up on individual ropes, so make sure you give it a try when you come in!

Reservations are required to hire belayers for individual, group or private instruction. The New Jersey Rock Gym does not provide staff to belay or spot on a walk in basis.
